GCSE and A-Level Retakes: Advice from Our Head of Teaching and Learning

Starting a GCSE or A-Level retake year can bring mixed feelings. You might feel hopeful about another opportunity, disappointed about your results, or a little anxious about doing it all again. Perhaps you are watching friends move on and wondering where you fit. My first piece of advice is to give yourself time to settle in. Retaking your exams is another opportunity to learn, grow and work towards the results you want. This is your journey, and it deserves your attention.

At Ealing Independent College, we focus on four Character Education virtues: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Reflection. Each has a practical part to play in making your retake year a positive experience.

Start with Reflection

Before starting a new topic, think about what happened last time. Which sections were difficult? Did you struggle to finish papers? Did your revision help you remember things when it mattered? Talk this through with your teachers, including what went well. Understanding your starting point helps us work out what will make a difference.

Take Responsibility for Your Progress

Responsibility means taking an active role in your next steps. Attend lessons, ask questions and act on feedback. Keep your goals manageable. “This week, I will practise explaining this topic and check my answers with my teacher” gives you something concrete to work towards. Those small commitments matter.

Show Yourself Respect

Respect includes how you treat yourself. Give yourself credit for making the decision to try again. Be honest about the support you need, allow time for rest and respect the different journeys of the people learning alongside you. Everyone brings their own challenges to the classroom.

Build Resilience

And Resilience? Sometimes it looks like having another go at a question you got wrong. Sometimes it means telling a teacher, “I still don’t understand.” Progress can be uneven, and a difficult lesson or disappointing test gives us something to work on together.

Make Your Retake Year Count

You don’t need to have the whole year worked out today. Choose one thing to improve this week, speak to your teachers and build from there. Whether you are retaking your GCSEs, resitting your A-Levels, or working towards a particular subject or grade, focus on the progress you can make one step at a time.

Your retake year is an opportunity to reflect on where you’ve been, take responsibility for where you’re going, respect yourself throughout the process and develop the resilience to keep moving forward.

We are here to help you make this opportunity count.
