Year 11 to Year 12: Why Summer Is the Perfect Time to Plan Your Next Step

a levels

The summer holidays are finally here. After a busy academic year, students and families should absolutely take time to rest, reset and enjoy a well-earned break.

For Year 11 students, however, this is also a natural moment to begin thinking gently about what comes next. Results day may still feel some way off, but plans for September often need to take shape before then – especially when choosing A Level subjects, considering sixth form options, or deciding what kind of environment will help a student thrive.

At Ealing Independent College, we understand that every student’s journey is different. Some students are confident about their next steps; others may still be weighing up their options. Some will be looking for a fresh start, a smaller setting, or a more personalised approach to their A Level studies. That is exactly where we can help.

A Levels with a personal touch

Choosing where to study A Levels is a significant decision. It is not just about subjects, timetables and results. It is about finding a place where a student is known, understood and supported.

At Ealing Independent College, our small class sizes allow teachers to get to know students properly. Lessons are focused, supportive and academically purposeful, giving students the space to ask questions, build confidence and develop the independent learning skills needed for success at A Level.

Our approach is personal rather than one-size-fits-all. Students are not treated as grades, averages or statistics. They are individuals, each with their own strengths, goals and areas for development.

Known, supported and guided

One of the key strengths of the College is the relationship between staff and students. Each student is supported by a Student Director, who oversees both academic progress and personal development. This gives students and parents a clear point of contact throughout their time at the College.

The Student Director helps monitor progress, support wellbeing, maintain communication with families and ensure that students remain focused on their next steps. This reflects the College’s wider approach: students are most likely to succeed when they feel secure, supported and understood.

A place to grow

We are a non-selective College, and we are proud of that. We believe education should be about growth, not comparison. Students join us with different experiences, different levels of confidence and different ambitions. Our role is to help each of them move forward.

For some, that means aiming for top universities. For others, it may mean apprenticeships, vocational routes, employment or simply rebuilding confidence in education. What matters is that the pathway is right for the individual.

Our objective is helping students develop the “knowledge, skills and confidence needed to progress successfully to the next stage of their education, training, or employment.” That remains at the heart of what we do.

Why think about September now?

Summer should be restful, but it can also be a useful time to ask a few important questions:

• Which A Level subjects feel right?
• What kind of learning environment will help me succeed?
• Do I need smaller classes or more individual guidance?
• Would I benefit from a fresh start?
• What support will help me stay motivated and confident?

These questions do not need to be answered all at once. But starting the conversation early can make September feel clearer, calmer and more positive.

We are here over the summer

Our Admissions Office remains open during the holiday period for families who would like to ask questions, discuss subject choices or explore availability for Year 12 places.

There is no pressure and no rush – just a conversation about what might be right for your son or daughter.

Places for Year 12 and specific subject combinations can become more limited as the summer progresses, so it is always helpful to make enquiries earlier rather than later.

Find your path

The end of Year 11 is an important moment. It marks the end of one stage, but also the beginning of a new one.

At Ealing Independent College, we offer a calm, supportive and ambitious environment where students are known, encouraged and guided towards their next step.

So, enjoy the summer. Take time to pause. But when you are ready to think about September, we are here.

Find your path.
