Supporting Special Education Needs at Ealing Independent College

At Ealing Independent College, we pride ourselves on fostering an inclusive environment where every student can thrive. Special Educational Needs (SEN) support is a vital aspect of our educational approach, ensuring that students with diverse challenges receive the tailored care and resources they need to succeed.

Laura, our Vice Principal, plays a pivotal role in leading our SEN initiatives as both the SEN Coordinator (SENCO) and Designated Safeguarding Lead. With a wealth of experience, Laura is dedicated to the holistic development of our students. “I enjoy seeing the students grow and develop during their time here,” she shares, reflecting on the rewarding journeys of students who have transformed under our care. One notable success story is a student with autism who initially struggled with school attendance. Over time, with the right support, this student has become an independent learner, eagerly preparing for university. Such transformations are at the heart of what we do at Ealing Independent College.

Our commitment to SEN extends beyond the classroom. From the moment students enter the College, they have access to an excellent support system. Maria, our Welfare Officer, prioritises student wellbeing and is always available for those who need someone to talk to. Additionally, our new Peer Mentoring system pairs Year 13 students with younger students, providing relatable support and guidance. Our teaching staff also adopts an open-door policy, ensuring that students feel comfortable seeking help whenever needed. This accessibility fosters strong relationships between teachers and students, which is crucial for successful learning.

Central to our approach is the development of personalised learning plans (PLPs) tailored to each student’s unique needs. By collaborating with teachers, parents, and external specialists, we ensure that every student receives targeted support that addresses their specific challenges. This personalised attention helps students excel academically while also building confidence and resilience. Laura expresses pride in the growing number of students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) at Ealing Independent College. Many local authorities now view us as a trusted partner school, referring their most vulnerable students to our inclusive environment. “We have created a safe haven for students who have previously struggled to attend school,” she notes. Our small class sizes enable teachers to get to know students well, allowing for tailored instruction and fostering a sense of community. This personalised approach is key to helping each student reach their full potential.

Laura also leads Futures Week for Year 12 students, providing essential guidance on university applications and career pathways. Through workshops and mentoring, students gain insights into the UCAS process, personal statements, and interview preparation. This support is invaluable for those uncertain about their future, helping them to make informed decisions about their educational and career aspirations.

As Ealing Independent College continues to grow, we are excited about the possibilities for expanding our SEN support further. With dedicated staff, a robust support system and a focus on individualised learning, we strive to create an inclusive environment where every student can flourish. We are proud of the progress our students make and look forward to continuing to support their journeys towards success. If you would like to learn more about our SEN support or how we can assist your child, please feel free to reach out. Together, we can help every student achieve their full potential!
