Ealing Independent College 0-2 Collingham College

Team: Abdullah; Danial, James, Jack; Brent, Josh (Hakim), Luc; Chifum

The last three matches have seen Ealing turn in some very encouraging performances, bringing two victories and a draw with a greater sense of cohesion and teamwork amongst the side. Last night at Burlington Danes, the run was ended with a narrow defeat in a tight encounter to a Collingham side who passed the ball with purpose, overcoming their stubborn opponents in the process.

Ealing began with the same side who had almost snatched victory over Albemarle last week and both sides began strongly, with Collingham edging the best of the early chances. Shots were coming in from distance, dealt with ably by Abdullah, and Ealing were being kept honest at the back. Collingham’s runners up front were worrying the boys in white, and they had to work hard to keep pace with the men in blue. Ealing had their moments on the break, but they were restricted to efforts from long range, and none of them found their mark. A competitive half drew to a close soon after Collingham’s blonde midfielder was afforded enough space to drive a well-placed shot low and to the left of the despairing grasp of Ealing’s ‘keeper.

In truth, there was not much between the sides. It was simply Collingham’s superiority in eagerness to find space and make the best of it which set them apart. Hakim came on to replace Josh for the start of the second half, and initially offered some impetus. Chifum hit a drive high and wide before Brent surged forward before being stopped in his tracks. Collingham broke up the field and a well worked passing move was finished off by their right midfielder. James will have felt he might have cut out the cross, but Ealing did not let their heads drop at this stage. A few niggly fouls and forceful tackles started to litter the match, with Ealing giving as good as they got.

The last ten minutes brought with them some golden chances for the whites to set up a grandstand finish, Collingham having taken their foot off the pedal. Danial firstly intercepted a Collingham pass and found himself in on goal. His shot was pulled agonisingly wide though. Jack then snatched at another opening, the shot from his weaker right foot skewed wide. Finally Josh, having returned to replace Hakim, burst through on goal, but screwed his left foot finish wide of the far post. Had Ealing managed to get one back however, one feels that Collingham would have lifted their tempo back to match the impressive levels of the first half.

The side now have a break during half term, with four more matches remaining this season.

Man of the match – Brent - despite the loss, ran himself into the ground, and always looked dangerous. A tireless display.
