Irresistible Ealing break records in goal avalanche

09 Dec 2016

League match – 9th December 2016

Ealing Independent College 8-1 Chelsea Independent College

Team: Sultan; Jamie; Zak, Tom, Kai (Isaga), Georges (Zak N), Hamza (Jake); Egli

Goals: Georges 3, Egli 2, Kai, Zak N, Zak A

Ealing sent out a statement of intent last night at Burlington Danes, destroying their opponents in an overwhelming display which could, and should, have given them a win at an even greater margin than this record victory produced. Last week’s slow start against DLD had to be put behind them, and the whites raced out of the gate to strike two early goals through Georges and Egli, punishing some questionable defending in doing so. At this point, it was one-way traffic, but an almighty Ealing error gifted a way back into the game for Chelsea. Allowed to stroll around half way, with no challenge forthcoming from the whites’ midfield, the tall Chelsea striker unleashed a powerful shot from all of 35 yards. It skipped off the turf and beat the passive Sultan in goal. The Ealing players and coach stood incredulous as the big hitman celebrated.

It took around five minutes for the champions to get that out of their system, but when they did, things finally started to click. Egli, Kai and Georges started to link up to great effect, supported by Zak and Hamza. Chelsea were finding it extremely difficult to cope with their close passing play and three goals came very quickly, with Georges replenishing the two goal cushion, Kai smashing home at the near post, and the first half goals being rounded off with a delightful clipped finish from Georges to complete his hat-trick.

At half time, the side committed to continuing their search for goals. Kai was replaced by Isaga, who was harshly omitted from the team despite his rich vein of form in front of goal. A superb flowing move from back to front, featuring almost all of the side found its way to Egli, who took an assured touch inside a defender and finished with a flourish beyond the despairing dive of the now disconsolate Chelsea ‘keeper. Georges then made way for Zak N, who quickly made an impact, finishing clinically after a rebound came to him to make it 7-1. Jake replaced Hamza and even more space came available when a Chelsea player inexplicably completed his second slide challenge in a matter of minutes to find himself ejected from the action.

Ealing started to become profligate in front of goal however. Isaga, after doing all of the hard work in beating two defenders all ends up with some cute skills then got himself into an overwhelming muddle in trying to convert the chance he created for himself. Chelsea sunk deeper and deeper to try to avoid further arrears, but they could do little to stop the goal of the night and perhaps the season so far from Zak A, who danced around five statuesque Chelsea defenders before luring the ‘keeper into a dive, dragging the ball back, and quickly shifting it before back heeling into an empty net. It was an incredible solo effort.

It was a real pity in the final few minutes that Ealing could not find another goal. Isaga broke clear and looked set to either square to Egli for his hat-trick or bury the chance himself. As it happened, he did neither, and a guilt-edged opportunity passed the whites by. The final action of the match saw Sultan make some amends for his earlier mistake, making a good stop to deny a Chelsea striker with his feet in what was only their second effort on goal.

Ealing now sit at the top of the table as the league shuts down for its Christmas break. They have taken 17 points from a possible 21 and now have a very healthy goal difference. More importantly, they may also now have found the perfect formation and system for the remainder of the season and tougher challenges to come.

Man of the match – Despite Georges’ hat-trick and Zak’s wonder goal, Egli put in a tremendous performance as striker, so gets the award, linking the play superbly and finishing clinically when called upon.
