February half term is usually a much needed time to recharge batteries. Yesterday at Westway however, it was time for a fully committed second Ealing derby of the season. Strangely for a league match, the lack of lessons ensured that the game could be played in glorious sunshine. Despite the February cold, it didn’t take long for the players to raise the heat with some robust challenges. One of which, though not malicious from Acil, brought howls of pain from Hamza, followed by howls of vomit. Previous to this, it had been an evenly matched encounter. The AS/GCSE side, in a very poor run of form, were giving as good as they got in the midfield, though struggling to create any clear cut chances. Evan at the other end was proving to be a thorn in the side of the reds, forcing Zak into a fine save before striking the foot of the post from a narrow angle. Following a long throw from Krystian, it was third time lucky for the striker, looping the ball over Danial before guiding it into the top corner past Zak from just outside the box. Evan has not scored many goals this term, but those he has have been stunners.

The AS/GCSE side have often let their heads go down after losing the first goal but not this time. They continued to pressurise their older opponents, and as the half ended, it was still a very close match. As players tired into the second half, and the reds had to start chasing the game, play became more open with chances coming thick and fast. The more disciplined positional play of the A2 side now started to tell. Hitting their opponents on the break, chances came first for top-scorer Hamze, who again forced a superb save from Zak’s foot, Jamie R who screwed his effort wide, and then captain Krystian who did the same. The A2 team didn’t stop pushing for a second though and a flowing passing move finally found Krystian, who despatched a clinical left foot shot into the bottom corner. This gave the whites breathing space and they now started to enjoy themselves. Zak came out of goal for the reds, giving them more control on the ball but again they were failing to make clear chances, while leaving themselves horribly exposed to a counter attack.

One of the breakaways put the final nail in the coffin. A long clearance put Hamze through and he showed great composure to set himself before coolly slotting past Danial to grab his seventh goal of the season. Try as they might, the reds could not get a consolation. Finally they were able to create an opening for Hasan but he snatched at his shot, pulling it wide and summing up another disappointing day for the AS/GCSE team. All they can do now is try to avoid finishing bottom of the league. The A2 side have far loftier ambitions, and now know that the league title is firmly in their hands. Three wins from their final games and no other team can catch them.

Man of the Match: Krystian

An honourable mention has to go to Seb, who had a very impressive debut, but Krystian rediscovered his performance level from last year, leading the team excellently and notching a goal too.
