GCSE Students help those in need with Ealing Food Bank

GCSE Students help those in need with Ealing Food Bank

The Year 10 students here at Ealing Independent College decided that they would like to do something for those in need in the local community during this festive time of the year. As one student said, “We feel that at this time of the year it is important to help those in need.”

It was agreed, after much debate and research, that they would like to collect donations for the Ealing Food Bank. “Over 90% of the food distributed by foodbanks is donated by the public –food donations are absolutely vital to give everyone a balanced and nutritious three-day supply of food.” This quote, which comes from the Food Bank website, really had an immediate impact on the students and provided the impetus for their project. Their rationale behind collecting for this cause was that it is fairly easy to organise and manage however all the proceeds would go directly to those in need. After discussing the initiative with the food bank and attaining a list of desired items (shopping list) the class designed posters to highlight what they were attempting to do. Posters were placed in all available spaces advertising the aim of the project. Empty boxes were strategically placed around the college so that the student community could donate as they chose. The charity event has been well received by the college community and a great deal has thus far been collected. The initiative closes on the 10 December thereafter the Year 10s will personally deliver the food parcel to Ealing Food Bank.

Collecting for the food bank, and those less fortunate than themselves has had a significant impact on how the students view those in need. They have come to realise how easy it is to do something that is charitable and makes a difference.

“Helping the homeless has enlightened my views on those needier than me – I feel I can now truly empathise with those in need and lend a helping hand” Mia
