Photography exhibition themed tour in London

On Saturday the 3rd June, the Ealing Independent Photography department embarked upon Photography exhibition themed tour around London. We started at the Photographers' Gallery off Oxford Circus, where the nominees for the prestigious Deutsche Borse prize were on display. This is the fine art photography equivalent of the Turner Prize and the students were taken by all the contenders' work, but the stark black and white portraits of the residents of a Los Angeles housing estate, taken over the course of 20 years by eventual winner of the prize Dana Lixenburg, made a particularly strong impression.

 
 

Student Ehsan Pishdad said: 'I really liked the portraits. I found them really interesting.'

Student Romina Mohammadi said: ' I thought the idea that Dina Lixenberg used was remarkable and the way she represented the residents of the housing estate was very powerful, therefore the prize was well deserved'

The next destination, Beaconsfield Gallery in Vauxhall, had on on the show the winners of the Foam Talent awards for 2017. Foam is one of Europe's pre-eminent Photography publications. On an annual basis, it selects the 20 most talented photographers under 35 to promote new directions in the medium, and it is always a challenging, provocative selection.

 
 

From there it was a bit a short bus ride to the Tate Modern to visit the large Wolfgang Tillmans retrospective. Probably one of the most celebrated contemporary photographers still practising, Tillmans' creative philosophy that  'If one thing matters, then everything matters' resulted in a very exciting and dynamic display, mixing banal urban shots with high-end professional portraits as well as beautiful large scale abstracts. The students very much enjoyed the work which will hopefully feed back into their own creative work.

Student Amber Wazacz said: 'I found it interesting to see Wolfgang Tillmans take a unique approach to capturing ordinary things, transforming them into though provoking images'

 
 

We were both exhausted and exhilarated by the end of the day, but all the efforts will have been worth it when the students start to digest what they have seen and think about how it all relates to their own work.
