No fireworks on bonfire night, but a big improvement

League match – 5 November 2015

Ealing Independent College AS/GCSE 1-3 David Game College College

Goal scorer: Georges

Linford Christie stadium was the setting for Ealing’s AS and GCSE team’s second match, and one which they would be seeking a huge improvement from last time out where they were completely outclassed. They needed more leadership, more cohesion as a team and an improved desire to get on the front foot from the off. It was exactly what was needed, and exactly what they delivered, having made some significant changes from last week’s Collingham mauling. Hasan started as the lynchpin at the back and gave an assured Beckenbaueresque display. Zak was in goal, and was excellent both as a defensive barrier and an outlet to begin attacks, and the team had a greater balance all round.

The first half was keenly fought, but Ealing started brighter. The reds fashioned a few half-chances before some great work by Isaga and Kai found Georges. He made a smart turn before lashing an unstoppable shot past the strangely ginger-bearded David Game goalie. At this point, Ealing needed to step things up and go for the kill. They had a decent chance with a free kick just outside the box, though they could not get a shot away, and Isaga had a shot from a narrow angle which had the David Game stopper worried. As the half grew however, the greens came more into the game. Ealing retreated into defence, and this allowed their opponents to soak up long periods of possession whilst maintaining the lion’s share of territory. Their shots were capably dealt with by Zak though, who made at least three superb stops.

At half time, Ealing had a slender advantage, but needed to heed the warnings that the end of the first half was shouting at them. Try as they might however, they could not get out. It took a lovely piece of skill to equalise though, the nippy winger in the green dazzling with a great touch round the corner to beat Suleyman. He then found a teammate who slotted a well-directed drive past the despairing Abdi. Ealing started to try to hit David Game on the break and forced a few openings, the best of which fell to Isaga whose shot was powerful, but could only find the side-netting. A rash challenge by Hasan at this point, who could not stay on his feet, gifted the greens a free kick on the edge of the box. A smart lay off to the nippy winger, now proving a constant thorn in the side of Ealing, led to a clinical finish to give David Game the lead.

Ealing needed a response but they fell further behind following a scrappy David Game third, the old problem of giving away possession in a dangerous area coming back to haunt the reds. At 3-1, they made two good openings which could have rescued matters – passed up by Georges and Ryan – but it was not to be. The players should reflect on a better performance though, particularly in the first half.

Team: Zak, Hasan (Daniel), Jonathan (Suleyman), Acil, Isaga (Enver), Kai (Thomas), Georges, Ryan

Man of the match:  1) Zak – some superb saves and good distribution. 2) Hasan – Accomplished defensive performance. 3) Acil – selfless performance in midfield.
