Maths Students Crack the Code

17 Dec 2015

Since 5th October 2015, as part of our Puzzle Club, three of our A Level Maths students - Adil, Tri and Mohamed – have been taking part in the National Cipher Challenge 2015. This year's competition centres on adventures in post war Berlin, with students tracking down the Reichsdoktor by helping to crack the enemy's codes and ciphers.

Competing against 3,500 students from schools and colleges up and down the country, the boys have cracked a series of codes to move through the rounds. Sadly Tri was stopped at challenge number 6, but Mohamed and Adil are going strong in the final challenge, there are only around 500 students still competing. Adil has even picked up a prize for his entry into Part 7A of the challenge.

First prize for the best individual entry this year will be the GCHQ prize of £1,000. The prize for the best team entry, Harry's prize, will be supported by The University of Southampton Mathematics Department, again for £1,000. Runners up prizes for the best individual are sponsored by Trinity College Cambridge and for the best team by IBM who have both agreed again to support the competition with prizes of £800.

The overall winners will be decided after the last challenge closes in January. It went live today at 3.15pm. We wish Adil and Mohamed luck, hopefully they can pick up a prize.

The winners will be invited to a prize giving at Bletchley Park organised by our partners at BCS on Friday 4th March. There will be some tickets available for the event which will involve a fun lecture and an opportunity to tour the park and museums.
