Introducing our Heads of Departments

31 Aug 2017

The passion and dedication our Heads of Departments and teachers have in helping students reach their academic goals is truly unique. At EIC we take great pride in creating bespoke learning programmes tailored for all of our students' learning needs. There are many great examples at the College of members of staff going the extra mile to support and guide students here, a great example being our Vice Principal (Pastoral), Dr Liz Chare, sitting the A Level exams with her students last year.

As the Autumn Term is fast approaching, we are delighted to share the profiles of our team of highly experienced new and returning Heads of Departments at the College.

Dr Elizabeth Chare

Vice Principal (Pastoral)

Dr Elizabeth Chare has two main roles within the College, namely Vice Principal (Pastoral) and Head of Science. Her role as Vice Principal gives a focus in the pastoral care of our students and as Head of Science ensures a high standard of teaching and learning is maintained in the Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics departments. She gained her science degree at Oxford University.

Elizabeth’s passion is to guide the academic and social development of all students ensuring that they achieve their potential at GCSE and A-Level and secure the best possible university place. To this end, Elizabeth has hugely enjoyed running UCAS Preparation Days at the College. This has involved an external careers advisor giving a lecture to students and parents regarding the application process as well as individual sessions with students to discuss their specific university choices. The UCAS days have also incorporated sessions where the students have started filling in their online UCAS form as well as assisting with the structure of their personal statements.

Allan Cairns

Director of Studies

Allan Cairns is Director of Studies at the College, as well as overseeing the Humanities faculty. He studied Modern History at the University of St Andrews, and then completed a PGCE in Secondary History at the University of Gloucestershire. Before coming to the College, Allan enjoyed ten years’ state school teaching experience, serving as both head of department and faculty. Allan has also enjoyed pastoral leadership, having been Head of GCSE at the College before his promotion to Director of Studies.

During his time in the profession he has organised international school partnerships in India, helped to lead a month-long excursion trekking through the jungles of Malaysia and Borneo, climbed a 5,200 metre high mountain whilst leading the first College overseas expedition to China and transformed a History corridor into a replica First World War Trench!

Allan teaches History and Geography at the College, and is dedicated to ensuring that academic quality across all subjects consistently meets the high standards which we set for ourselves. He also leads the College's extra-curricular activity programme, providing scope for students to thrive within and beyond their studies whilst coaching the football team, West London Independent College league winners for the last two years.
