Creative Writing - Spine Chillers

13 Jan 2016

In the creative writing class, the students were asked to produce a short story of no more than 100 words for a competition entitled Spine chillers – what lurks in your imagination? Below are three entries from our students:

The shadow grew larger, touched my bare toes and I felt a warm surge. My fingers tingled as I forced my body to wade through the unforgiving hard plastic rods of the curtain. My tired eyes met with my fate; several wheel chairs, hospital beds, syringes. And before me awaited a stumpy figure. The lighting was too bright. My eyes adjusted to the light, but before I could utter a word, a stone cold palm pulled my body forward. Directly, falling onto a hospital bed, it pinned me down as a thick needle entered my wrist. The stumpy figure beckoned me.

Slowly I step onto a gloomy room; the darkness gently covers me like a shroud. I look around,  still cannot form an image, but a sense hovers over me like a dead rat being eaten by a kingdom of worms, stinking worse than a cess pit. My heart beat speeds up faster than cars crashing into tracks. I feel cold strange hands, cooler than an icy flowing river on my shoulders. My mind shouts, “Don’t look, don’t look back”, while petrifying memories follow me to the edge of the roof. I run faster, getting trapped by a bear claw.

Dusty chairs and tables had taken over the room. We were standing in the middle of a building which once was a school full of cheerful children. We hear something fall; we all start looking in different directions. What was it? I walk towards a huge wooden door. I reach for the handle but then a cold hand pats me. I look back, “What are you doing?” There was a tall skinny figure dressed in black clothing. He had hazel eyes and a beard and he gave me a stern look. “You’re not allowed in here, this is a crime scene”
