Shawn
Marc
Shawn Daniel, a student at Ealing Independent College, was selected as the winner of the Paul Nurse
Scholarship, which will cover his tuition fees for three years. Shawn is now
reading Biological Sciences (Animal Biology) at Birmingham, having achieved three As at A-level with us.
Sir
Paul M. Nurse is a British biochemist and Nobel Laureate, best known for his
research on the cell cycle, and for his work at the London Research Institute
of Cancer Research UK. He is an Alumnus of the University of Birmingham (from where he received his undergraduate degree in
Biology in 1970) as well as the University of East
Anglia
(where he completed his PhD in 1973).
He
began his research in 1976, and in 1984 he joined the Imperial Cancer Research
Fund (ICRF, now known as the Cancer Research UK London Research Institute).

A
former chairman of the microbiology department at the University of Oxford, he was named Director General of ICRF in1996. In
2003 he became president of Rockefeller University in New York City where he continues to work on the cell cycle of
fission yeast. He was knighted in 1998, and in 2001 he was jointly awarded the
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Every
year, the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham award a prestigious, full fees scholarship named
after him, the Paul Nurse scholarship, to a student of exceptional academic
ability.
