GCSE

A wide range of courses is offered in order that students can have a good breadth of disciplines within their programme.

Year 9/10: more students are now choosing to join the College for year 9. All students follow a minimum of eight subjects. Students in years 9 and 10 are taught much the same material in class with some differentiation. This gives able students the opportunity to be fast tracked and move into year 11 a year early if it is seen to be desirable on educational grounds.

At interview the programme is tailor made to suit the individual’s strengths and interests – there is not a compulsory curriculum as such. Mathematics and English are compulsory. The remaining subjects are chosen to try and give a balanced curriculum.

Year 11: students are streamed at this point in Mathematics and English and the English Literature course is also offered from the start of year 11.

In years 9, 10 and 11 PSHE and PE are a compulsory part of the curriculum.

One year retake: students can follow any number of GCSE subjects, but the majority choose five or six. These courses are largely geared to students who have already covered the GCSE course before and want to improve their grades. Students are admitted onto these courses who have not followed the syllabus previously, but at interview, the workload is carefully considered together with the coursework implications. Occasionally the GCSE course is considered the best alternative since there is no coursework component.

Intensive GCSE Mathematics: this course runs from September to November. In general it is only suitable for those students who do not want to re-sit the coursework component since the amount of time available is very little.

When GCSE students (irrespective of age) are not timetabled for lessons they will have supervised study.
