Ealing A2 salvage draw from wreck of a performance

01 Feb 2016

League match – 28th January 2016

Ealing Independent College 2-2 David Game College

Team: Azim, Jamie G, Mohamed, Malcolm (Hamza), Jamie C, Hamze, Krystian, Evan

They lost two goals, they lost possession of the ball time after time, the coach almost lost his voice from a barrage of shouting in frustration at the performance, but somehow the A2 side managed not to lose their unbeaten record in a bizarre match at Westway last night. The rush-hour traffic led to a delayed start which adversely affected the preparation of the whites, and David Game College also seemed unprepared – with no kit and what seemed to be a team of unfamiliar individuals – along with a referee who seemed completely unaware about the rules of the 8-a-side league. Nonetheless, the game kicked off and quickly settled into a very open encounter.

From the start, Ealing’s passing was inaccurate and early errors gifted David Game possession. The David Game players were tetchy and argumentative with the referee when anything didn’t go their way, but were lucky that he didn’t adhere to normal rules – their keeper picked the ball up metres outside where a normal penalty box would be and possibly the worst foul throw I’ve ever seen was not penalised after he decided kick ins would bring the ball back into play. Ealing A2 should have risen above this but they didn’t. They simply sunk to David Game College’s level, forgetting the passing play which had brought them two consecutive league victories. Malcolm gave the ball away in his own half, then missed a tackle which allowed a David Game striker to nip in and square the ball to his teammate who poked the ball in below Azim.

Ealing needed to show some fighting spirit and they did. After putting a few passes together for what seemed like the first time in the match, Hamze despatched a powerful shot from distance between the legs of David Game College’s makeshift keeper, dressed in the unique kit of a shirt, v-neck jumper and shorts. This should have been the spark to drive the whites on but they continued to struggle to make progress. David Game were controlling possession and making the best chances, hitting the bar and forcing several corners. Ealing had their chances on the break. Evan blasted a couple of shots wide, lacking composure when chances came to be denied by defenders coming back. It was David Game who again took the lead though when they broke following an Ealing corner. They broke swiftly and practically walked the ball in.

Hamza’s introduction gave the team in white more impetus. Hamze had some more shots wide and Krystian and Jamie C both struck speculative efforts from distance which did not trouble the keeper. Finally Hamza hit the target with a decent shot which squirmed below another poor goalkeeping effort to level matters. Chances came and went towards the end, with Ealing denied two blatant fouls. Evan was cleaned out from the back, and Hamze was also taken down from behind for what would have been a match deciding penalty. Not that Ealing deserved to win this. A poor performance got as much as it merited here.

Man of the Match: Hamze

The best of a bad bunch really, scored a vital goal and always looked dangerous on the ball. Denied a stonewall penalty at the end too, which could have got his side a very lucky victory.
